Immigrants on their over-crowded boat, riding to freedom in America.  Many Immigrants died on the journey over.

Once the immigrants arrived at Ellis Island, they had to go through many tests and examinations.  These women are going through the female physical examination.
Since there were so many immigrants, they had to wait for long periods of time to be examined.  Here they are waiting inside the hall at Ellis Island.
