Carlo Cassino

Carlo Cassino On January 8, 1862, in Capua, Italy, Carlo Cassino was born.  His father, Aldo Cassino, was the owner of the family restaurant, the Cassino Pizzeria.  Carlo’s mother, Laura Cassino, also worked at the pizzeria.  Carlo grew up in Capua until he reached the age of thirty-one.  At that time, he was married to Diletta Cassino, and had three children – two daughters and a son.  Their son’s name was Tony, the oldest daughter was Marie, and the youngest was named Natalia.  That year, a large earthquake nearly destroyed Capua and he decided to take his family to a safer place, such as America.

They traveled to America on the boat, the Citta di Milano on April 28, 1907.  After a long journey, they arrived at Ellis Island.  Once inspected, they were admitted into America.  Carlo and his family settled in a small house outside of New York City.  Carlo became a railroad laborer in New York and spent most of his time working on New York’s railroads.  Diletta, along with their three children, worked in a sweathouse for the N.Y. Tailor and Bridal shop, where they worked at sewing machines to fix clothing and make wedding dresses, tuxedos, and other clothing.

Carlo Cassino continued to work on the railroad and eventually became a manager.  The second day of being manager, Carlo died by a dynamite explosion when a repair cart rolled by, a spark flew off the tracks and lit a dynamite fuse.  His wife, Diletta lived on to the age of 55, when she died of a rare form of Hepatitis.
