Historical Essay Over the next several weeks students will engage in research and writing to explore the phenomenon of immigration to America from Europe and Asia at the turn of the century. After selecting a country of origin, students will create a fictitious immigrant and explore that person’s experience based on extensive research directed by given focus questions. Each member of the class will create a web page documenting the immigrant experience of their character from the decision to leave the homeland, to the passage to America, to settling in their new country. This story will be told via a brief character sketch, three memoir excerpts, an historical essay to accompany the memoir and several pictures and artifacts. Together these web pages will provide a virtual tour of Asian and European immigrant experiences through Angel and Ellis Island. The fruits of this labor will contribute to ¼ of students’ History and English grades for the trimester. |
