If

If freckles were lovely, and day was night,
And measles were nice and a lie warn’t a lie,
            Life would be delight,---
            But things couldn’t go right
            For such a sad plight

I
wouldn’t be I.

If earth was heaven, and now was hence,
And past was present, and false was true,
            There might be some sense
            But I’d be in suspense
            For on such pretense

You
wouldn’t be you

If fear was plucky, and globes were square,
And dirt was cleanly and tears were glee
            Things would seen fair,-
            Yet they’d all despair,
            For if here was there

We
wouldn’t be we.

If

If ears could always hear, and dark was bright,
And glass was gold and the law was always right,
            All would be happy,
Things would be all a fray
            For such unorganized world

I
wouldn’t be I.

If oceans were deserts, and fire was ice,
And tomorrow was today, fear was courage,
            There would be some few
            But all would be mighty
            For I would be waiting

You
wouldn’t be you

If lightning was cold, and bubbles sunk,
And ice a dull green and birds did not sing
            All would seem dreary,
            And all would seem said,
For things to be had gone

We
wouldn’t be we.
