Inspired Poetry of Nash's Work

The Guppy
Ogden Nash

Whales have calves,
Cats have kittens,
Bears have cubs,
Bats have bittens,
Swans have cygnets,
Seals have puppies,
But guppies just have little guppies.

Size Up To This!
Greg Cornell
Inspired by "Guppies" by Ogden Nash

Big people create little people,
To have someone to look after.
Big dogs create little dogs,
To give a house some jive.
Big birds create little birds,
     To make someone’s hat white.
Big cats create little cats,
To scratch on anything they can.
Big fish create little fish,
     To make the fisherman happy.
Big lizards create little lizards,
To have something to stare at.
Big elephants create little elephants,
To make the zoo an actual attractions.
Big monkeys create little monkeys,
To accompany the thousands of trees.
And big mouths create little mouths,
To yell at all these creatures.

More About People

Ogden Nash

When people aren't asking questions
They're making suggestions
And when they're not doing one of those
They're either looking over your shoulder or stepping on your toes

And then as if that weren't enough to annoy you
They employ you.
Anybody at leisure
Incurs everybody's displeasure.
It seems to be very irking
To people at work to see other people not
working,
So they tell you that work is wonderful medicine,
Just look at Firestone and Ford and Edison,
And they lecture you till they're out of breath or
something
And then if you don't succumb they starve you to
death or something.
All of which results in a nasty quirk:
That if you don't want to work you have to work to earn enough money so that you won't have to work.

What Is This World Coming To?
Greg Cornell
Inspired by "More About People" by Ogden Nash

When people aren’t asking questions
They’re complaining or putting other people
down.
What is this world coming to?

Somebody bossing around somebody else,
Somebody pushing somebody else,
Always somebody hurting someone else’s
feelings.
What is the world coming to?

At work, the employees and employers.
At school, the friends and “x-friends”.
At parties, good friends and “acquaintances”.

What is this world coming to?
