Lindsey Hume

A Prized Diamond

My name is original yet proud. Not many others share my name, and only a few share its spelling. It is like an exclamation point, said in a different tone every time. My grandmother says it like the lyrics of a song, flowing wonderfully together in a happy tune. My baby brother says it as an impossible jumble of letters making no sense what so ever, as he struggles to spit out every consonant. When my mother is mad at me, my name is a sharp needle piercing through the skin. And when my friends call it out, it is exciting and happy, like a birthday package left upon a doorstep. However, I think of my name as a single seagull soaring boldly amongst the sky. My name is the sunlight, piercing through the clouds on a rainy day.  It is a single roes, standing strongly in a thick patch of weeds. A very beautiful site.  It is also brave, like a little girl trying out for a boy’s baseball team, believing in herself every step of the way. And it is proud like a flag on a tall pole that brilliantly waves through the air.

My name can stand confidently alone without worrying what others might say when they see it all by itself. It is never unsure, and is never nervous or embarrassed. When I say my name, I like to pretend like it is a fragile crown, precious and valuable.   And when I say it, the syllables role off of the tip of my tongue, ringing and echoing through the air like wind chimes.

I was not named after anyone in particular. I do not know of any other relatives, friends, or famous people that have my name. But this is a good thing the way I see it. I have no expectations to live up to, and no one to please. I can create my own standards for my name, being the first one of my family to live as Lindsey. I am the only one to be called this, alone and proud, just like my name.  And maybe if I lead a positive life, long after I die all of the Lindseys to come will be compared to me. Wouldn’t that be something? Maybe one day, a great-granddaughter will be named after me, and she will wonder what I was like.  Maybe her name will bring her the same sense of confidence, pride, and bravery that it has brought to me.

My name is pride, confidence, bravery, boldness, and originality. I am the only one I know with my name, therefore making it extraordinary, like a prized diamond- the only one of it’s kind.
