Why Everyone Loves Puppies

By Michelle Luo

Burying your face

In their warm, soft fur,

And hearing their heart softly beat

As it quietly echoes in your ear

Feeling their wet nose rub against your leg

And looking back down at them

Into their bold, black eyes

Like they’re begging you to play

Running with them in the spring

Stopping along the way

To taste the sweet honeysuckle

Filling your nose with scents of fresh flowers

Feeling the breeze rush through your hair

Hearing the soft padding of your dog’s feet

Along the rough, gravel path

Hearing them bark, happily

As they romp through the bright leaves in fall

Play with the snow in the winter

Run through the flowerbeds in the spring,

And frolic in the salty ocean water in the summer

Telling them secrets

Knowing they can’t tell anyone:

Crying when your heart is broken,

Squealing with delight when you feel thrilled

Dumping your worries on them.

Then they look at you,

And all your doubts drift away.

Falling asleep with them in a soft bed,

And feeling their warm body snuggled against your skin.

Waking up, smiling, as you hide your face in their fur

And glide back into a peaceful dream.

Shadows

By Michelle Luo

The night approaches

Slowly the sunlight fades

All that is left are the flickering

Streetlights, standing tall and alone

The shadows are coming

The dark seeps through

The light will be extinguished

Leaving the eerie pitch-black night
