An Interview with Nyk Baglio
Here is the inside scoop on one of the Triangle’s best drummers. Sarah Berger had the chance to interview Nyk Baglio, the drummer from the rock band MorissonPoe. Nyk explained how he became interested in drums after admiring his father’s musical career, which included playing with the band Steam, whose number one hit song was “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.”

Q: How did you get interested
in drums?
A: My dad was a professional musician, and he started teaching me when I was
like 3.
Q: What was the first concert
that you went to?
A: First concert that I went to see was Huey Lewis and the News.
Q: What’s your favorite band?
A: Depends on the style of music. Ahh,
that’s an impossible question.
Q: If there was one band you
could play with, who would it be?
A: Dream Theatre. Just because of the
level of musicianship of the band. Every
guy is incredible with their instruments.
Q: How did your band get
started?
A: When I went to school for music, the band had fired their drummer and they
had hired me to help finish their album since it was in recording.
They basically got me to do one show and
that was that. I was hooked.
Q: What’s the most exciting
show you’ve played?
A: I would have to say…opening for My Chemical Romance and HIM at Skate and Surf
Fest in New Jersey. I think that’s what
they call Bamboozle now, but before it was Skate and Surf Fest.
Q: Do you have any advice for
high school kids who are thinking about starting a band?
A: I think it’s easiest to start it with friends.
The most important thing is about having
fun. It’s also a good way to meet
people. A jam session is the best way
because people just show up with their instruments and make music.
Q: How do you decide what to
wear before you play a show?
A: Basically [with] what we do it’s very important you look like no one else in
the building. We usually choose a color
scheme like black and red. And
everyone in the band will wear those colors and it looks a lot more unified on
sage. And you can always tell who’s who.
Q: Do you have any tattoos?
A: Actually I don’t. I’ve tried to get a
tattoo so many times but I couldn’t make up my mind.
I just don’t want to get something
stupid that will be on me forever. I
haven’t had anything meaningful in my life that I want to be permanently on me.
