Hugo Wolf – a Mad Man?

| In September, Hugo Wolf wanted to release his Opera “The Corregidor” at the Royal Opera in Vienna. His visit to the new Opera Director Gustav Mahler, however, ended in a violent argument. Two weeks ago, Hugo Wolf started exhibiting strange behavior for the first time. He claimed himself to be the director of the Vienna Opera. Therefore, he was sent to the asylum at the Alsergrund. Hugo Wolf commented, “How happy I am now that I got rid of all my friends. I look forward to my life in loneliness.” |

The Tragic Death of Hugo Wolf

The musician Hugo Wolf died yesterday in the insane
Asylum Alsergrund. Hugo Wolf has been buried at a Viennese central
cemetery, near Schubert and Beethoven.
Hugo Wolf was most well known for his songs.
After
an argument with the opera director, Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf suffered a
severe psychological illness.
He believed himself to be an opera director. This led to him spending the last years of his life in the insane Asylum, Alsergrund.

October 5, 1907 He had in fact, already conducted the Opera in Budapest from 1888-1891, and was a successful conductor but his compositions were mainly unknown in Vienna. As Opera Director he changed the rehearsal schedules and was the first to darken the auditorium. Last July, Gustav Mahler’s oldest daughter Anna Maria died. Perhaps this was the reason fro his decision to end his career as the Director of the Royal Opera.

April 4, 1897 Yesterday the well-known composer, Johannes Brahms died in his adopted hometown Vienna. Johannes Brahms was born on May 7 1833 in the German town of Hamburg. In 1862 he came to Vienna for the first time, where he directed the Viennese Song Academy. He was such a successful pianist, conductor and composer that he moved to Vienna once and for all in 1872. Although Johannes Brahms had many critics he was still a great success. His friends included Theodor Billroth and Johann Strauss Jr. With his death Vienna has lost an extraordinary musician. |
