Roosevelt Declared Winner!
May 6, 1895

 Yesterday Theodore Roosevelt was elected Police Commissioner of New York City. The people of New York are interested in a reformer, and that reformer is Mr. Roosevelt. He is a progressive and is concerned about abuses of power made by the government and businesses. He wants to make the United States a better place to live. He believes that the government has an important role to play in this transformation. As many remember the growing demand for reform with the exposure of alliances between criminals and police. The book How the Other Half Lives (1890) by Jacob Riis's exposed the poverty and its effects on people to Mr. Roosevelt and fueled his crusade for reform.

 

Baruch, Simon

Simon Baruch is a German-born American citizen who plans to revolutionize our health and our life. Baruch first appeared on the medical scene in 1888 when he insisted that doctors operate on appendicitis as soon as it occurs. He is a Prussian-Polish American, who immigrated to the United States in the 1850’s. He served as a rebel surgeon during the American Civil War.
George Michael Cohan

George Michael Cohan was born in 1878 and is referred to as the “Man who owned Broadway”. 45 Minutes From Broadway opened today at the New Amsterdam Theater, and it was written by Mr. Cohan. It is his second major play. He was born in Rhode Island and started acting at the age of nine. He went on to star in The Four Cohans. Cohan's first burst into Broadway was in 1901. His first true success was in 1904 when he stared as Yankee Doodle Boy in his musical Little Johnny Jones (1904). He plans to write many more plays. Cohan has written, "Give My Regards to Broadway," "You're a Grand Old Flag," and "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy."
