  The Tomb of Iyeyasu Tokugawa

The Death of the Famous Artist John La Farge (1835 - 1910)

November 14, 1910

John La Farge, one of the best American artists of the nineteenth century, passed away yesterday on November 14, 1910. He was born in 1835 and lived a long 75 years. They believe he was killed from being poisoned by lead that he had been working with for years. Most people that knew his art recognized his work in painting oils, watercolors, magazines and book illustrations and travel.

This is one of La Farge’s famous paintings. The name of this piece is The Tomb of Iyeyasu Tokugawa. He created this piece of art in memory of Mrs. Jerome Konheim. This piece is a series of monochromatic ink drawings that he created from pictures he had seen. La Fage’s painting was then engraved into a wood illustration. This painting is also signed with La Farge’s seal in Japanese in the lower left hand corner of this painting. We will always remember the great paintings and stain glass windows that he shared with the public from 1835-1910.
