This picture shows Applegarth’s Vertical Printing Press, an example of an innovative invention displayed at the Crystal Palace.  The printing press is a tool developed during the Italian Renaissance.  It serves as a copier of articles, newspapers, and books.  Currently, news about the French Revolution, women’s suffrage, the Peterloo Massacre, imperialism in Africa and Asia is being spread with the help of this type of printing machine.  Unfortunately, the quantity of these machines has been reduced recently due to the Luddites’ destructive raid. The model shown in this picture, which is more advanced than the standard Renaissance models, is used to efficiently reproduce the Illustrated London News.  The machine itself uses an entire room of space, and must be manned by a few people.  The people will feed the paper to the machine, which will print the text upon the paper.  The printing press has a large price, though advertisers seeking space in our newspaper easily pay it off.  The printing press has drastically influenced British culture.
