The object that is displayed is a flourmill; it is used to grind flour.  This mill is made out of wood and has been beautifully and elaborately engraved and decorated.  It sits on a wooden platform and as you can see this is not engraved like the rest of the object. This might give a more casual and comfortable feel to the whole object.  It is operated manually therefore it is not considered a machine, like those designed in the Industrial Revolution for the factories, and the Luddites did not object to it.  It has a knob to be operated with and this is how you are to grind the flour.  On the top there is a funnel that you poor the flour that is not ground yet.  Messers S. Adams & Co manufactured it.
