The object pictured above is a water closet. This
invention from the British
factories looks like a pot
being supported on a stand. The pot has two pipes sticking out of its
side to pump water in and out of the toilet. A water closet could be
found in any Victorian
household in the mid-1800’s because it represented
class and refinement. Chamber pots and privies were no longer found in
rich households. This water closet would have been featured in the Crystal
Palace because it was the latest advancement in plumbing,
convenience, and sanitation. The water closet needed to be connected to
a sewer system because it needed something to pump water in and out of.
This water closet helped to upgrade and revolutionize the sewer system
in England. |
